A 10-person delegation consisting of officials of Pakistan's National Assembly, Ministry of Climate Change, General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, Government of Punjab Lahore, and Government of Sindh visited IWHR on June 8, 2016, meeting with IWHR Vice President Wang Xiaogang. Representatives from WWF-Pakistan and IUCN Pakistan are also among the team.
Wang Xiaogang reviewed the exchange and cooperation history between IWHR and Pakistani partners, in particular the fruitful achievements in fields such as hydropower development, flood control, irrigation and sediment since the agreement was signed with Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) in 2009 and with Government of Sindh in 2014.
Muhammad Mueen Watto, member parliament of Pakistan's National Assembly, expressed his gratitude for IWHR's hospitality. He said the delegation was tasked with investigating and understanding the advanced Chinese concepts, technologies and experience in basin-wide flood management and utilization, so as to improve the adaptation and management of flood disasters in Pakistan while utilizing flood resources to help ecosystem restoration and drought mitigation.
Introductions were made at the meeting on the cooperation between IWHR and Pakistani institutions, as well as the Chinese practice in flood management, particularly the engineering and non-engineering system of flood control, flood risk management and the challenges ahead.
Discussions were also conducted on topics such as the construction and management of flood detention basins, flood control, utilization of floodplain and wetland, and ecological restorations.
