Abstract: This paper describes a method of dividing eco-region for instream flow calculation and provides an example of instream flow calculating based on eco-region. Through analyzing natural elements and aquatic ecological characteristics of the Taizi River Basin, and considering the pattern of ecological and economic water use, the spatial distribution of pollution source, and the discharging intensity of pollution, the 11 eco-regions for instream flow calculation have been generated based on GIS. Furthermore, the instream flow of the main stream of the Taizi River below for the 7 eco-regions downstream of the Guanyinge Reservoir has been calculated, using the series data of 1956-2008 and 1956-1973. The result from the calculation demonstrates that the instream flow has a near natural flow regime and the annual instream flow accounts for about 30% of the annual runoff at any hydrologic station. The instream flow is available by the improvement of water environment and the restoration of aquatic ecosystem.
