Abstract: This paper analyzes the ecological water demand of river valley forest in inland arid areas. The paper takes the river valley forest of the reach downstream of the Buerjin River outlet in Altay Mountains piedmont in Xinjiang as an example, and uses the reference crop method to calculate the ecological water demand of river valley forest in the research area. The results show that the ecological water demand in this area is 80 million m 3 . The water demand in June and July is relatively high and the amount of water demand in one month is about 1/4 of the amount in a whole year. These results provide important basic statistics for the watershed ecological protection and water resources allocation.

Key words: arid area, river valley forest, ecological water demand
