Abstract: Radiation damping effect is an important factor affecting seismic response of dam structure. In this paper the viscous-spring artificial boundary condition is adapted in the dynamic response analysis of gravity dam and the numerical implementation is provided in ABAQUS. It is proved that the method has high solution precision comparing with the theory resolution. Taking the typical gravity dam of Koyna as an example, the damaged plastic model is used in the analysis of the strong seismic response of dam, and it is shown that the damage result is similar to conventional method of fixed boundary with mass less foundation. Therefore the conclusion has some reference value on seismic study of gravity dam.
Key words: radiation damping, viscous-spring artificial boundary, mass less foundation, ABAQUS, gravity dam
