IWHR's Department of Water Resources undertakes a key technology research for groundwater abstraction cut-down and water supply security of Shenyang city. Three issues dominated the task: How the water groundwater environment will evolve after the abstraction is cut down, what kind of risks the city needs to address if the main water source is replaced from groundwater by inbound surface water, and how to adjust the water allocation plan with changing water conditions.
The project team managed to establish a multi-dimensional water allocation model and software system that conduct calculations and comparisons based on long time series and monthly data. A spectrum of solutions are consequently generated in different years, providing valuable reference to planning water resources allocation and securing water supply in a 20-year span in Shenyang city.
