On October 22, 2015, Prof. Peter Goodwin, the newly elected president of International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) visited IWHR. He met with Dr. Kuang Shangfu, IWHR President, and lectured at IWHR's Global Vision Forum, a platform for renowned scholars to share their views. Prof. Goodwin talked about balanced water supply and ecological restoration, taking the California Delta Science Program as an example.
Dr. Christopher George, IAHR executive director, and Prof. Liu Zhiping, IWHR vice president as well as the chair of IAHR China Chapter, also attended the meeting.
Dr. Kuang first extended his congratulations to Prof. Goodwin for his being elected as IAHR president, and thanked him for coming to IWHR as well as to the IAHR Beijing Office, which was launched early this early and hosted by IWHR. He spoke highly of the achievements the association has made in the past 80 years, particularly in advancing innovative development of water sciences, hosting high-quality academic journals, as well as promoting inter-disciplinary exchange and resources sharing. Dr. Kuang also briefed the visiting guests on what had been done since the launch of the association's new world office, the other equal one being stationed in Madrid, Spain, what would be done particularly in the preparation of a new journal and IAHR-related conferences, and reiterated IWHR's commitments in supporting the new office.
Prof. Goodwin thanked Dr. Kuang for his hospitality. He said IAHR is devoted to promoting hydro-environment engineering and research, as well as knowledge sharing through regional and international congresses, academic journals and action plans. IAHR members are from more than 100 nations and regions, and Chinese scholars are among the active members providing innovative solutions to global water challenges. Prof. Goodwin thanked IWHR for the support to IAHR, acknowledged the achievements that have been made, and looked forward to future development.
Views were also exchanged on the key directions and areas for future cooperation.
After the meeting, Prof. Goodwin gave a report at IWHR's Global Vision Forum on the challenges for water resources in the most populous state of the US. He introduced the water challenges now facing the drought-stricken California, the action plan to promote water management and innovative solutions, and the research activities as well as achievements in the related areas.
Discussions were made between IWHR engineers and Prof. Goodwin on ecological water demand, river water quality and ground water.
