IWHR signs MOU with Macau University of Science and Technology

Under IWHR’s strategic goal of becoming a world-class research institute of water resources and hydropower, on September 23, an IWHR delegation led by President Dr. KUANG Shangfu visited Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) where both parties signed an MOU and discussed future cooperation and exchanges. Dr. Liu Chak Wan, Chairman of MUST University Council, Dr. Joseph H.W. Lee, President of MUST and President of IAHR (International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research), and several other delegates of MUST greeted the IWHR delegation. Representatives from the Department of International Cooperation, Science and Technology of the Ministry of Water Resources (MWR) of China were also present at the meeting.

Dr. KUANG Shangfu expressed his gratitude for the long-lasting support of MUST, as well as his admiration for MUST’s great leap forward that made it a top 300 university in the world and also the largest comprehensive university in just about 20 years. He appreciated the stunning achievements made by MUST by giving full play to the resources and geographical advantages of Macau as an open city to nurture advanced thoughts, build leading platforms, establish several State Key Laboratories and field stations, and probe in a wide range of research areas from science to arts and humanities.

Dr. KUANG introduced the research focuses, critical achievements and long-time partners of IWHR. He hoped that IWHR and MUST establish long-term partnership and work together to tackle the water problems in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Great Bay Area, thus to better address the national needs and serving the high-quality development of the Great Bay Area.

Dr. Joseph H.W. Lee warmly welcomed the IWHR delegation. He introduced the future strategies of MUST to better address global challenges, including climate change, population growth, urbanization and COVID-19, and to seize the opportunities brought by the development of the Great Bay Area. He believed the cooperation with IWHR would inspire MUST in its effort of building a better society through applied water research.

Dr. KUANG Shangfu and Dr. Joseph H.W. Lee signed the MOU on behalf of the two sides. Based on the principle of equality and reciprocity, the two sides will conduct a series of academic exchanges and cooperation in research, education, and application to meet the demand of national development.

The two sides discussed project application, joint construction of labs, graduate student training, etc. Experts from the two sides held seminars about hydrology and water resources, water ecological environment, smart cities, the hydrodynamic mechanism of algae bloom, AI and automatic control, and atmospheric water cycle and accurate forecast.

The IWHR delegation also visited the exhibition hall, the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines, the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences, and the gallery of the School of Liberal Arts of MUST.
